Gladiators do it again

Train like a beast and play like an animal, a sportsman once proclaimed, and so does the Egerton Handball team manifest this rare spirit. Everyday moulded in their natural handball court  just adjacent to the pavilion, the Gladiators are the new kings of the rift valley handball.

 The team outclassed other varsities within the rift valley region to clinch the Annual Rift valley KUSA games. They will now join other sports disciplines like Basketball and Football in their new quest that is to lift the National titles during the National varsity KUSA games scheduled for December, after which all roads are bound to lead to Rwanda for the quenching of the regional title thirst.

The team boasts of a variety of individual talents in the name of sidesteppers Peter Ndung’u, Fabian Odhiambo, Peter Mwangi and Kajulo Gilbert, defensive heghts that are Andala Levi, Oyugi Kelvin an Hillary Munialo, the most flexible pivoter Mwangi Eric and in between the posts is the man who lives up to the name shotstopper, one Geoffrey Oloo. These are only but a fraction of who the real Gladiators are, like the neck that carries the head, there are players worth a mention too. But all the same they make up what is fast coming to be known (by other rival universities) as `the berlin wall of Njoro`

The arena of victory was The Maasai Mara university, formerly Narok University college.The who`s and who`s of the rift came droves to represent. With a tough fixture ahead of them as all teams present were to play a round robin fixture hence ensure that a team played all teams that honored the tournament , the gladiators laid out a strategy that as to see them wallop the hosts 20-12 in a tournament opener. This of course sent out signals the they were ready to continue with their unbeaten form in the region. Next was Egeton Nakuru Town Campus who paid homage to the gladiators even before the match began, they bowed 17-26 to the big boys of the main campus. Egerton perennial rivals Kabarak University proved a threat in the first half but the introduction of Peter Mwangi and expert  fast-breaker Ben Too silenced kabarak and ensured the head to head record between the two teams remained tilted to Egerton’s favour-100% winning record, 23-19 was the score.

To wind up the business for the day, The University of eldoret, formerly chepkoilel, which had won all their matches but one was to face Egerton in what appeared to be the tournament’s final match. A see-saw trend is what could best characterize the first half, though Egerton led 11-9 at the break. The stern touchline touch by Egerton Coach Mr.Gikari inspired the boys to a thrilling second half that led to Eldoret side technically give up and pave way of a 25-19 victory for the big boys from Njoro. The kings were henceforth crowned.

Aiming for the national and subsequent continental titles, the gladiators are well aware that Kenyatta university’s Trojans have become the first varsity side to beat the top club in the country’s league-NCPB, hence they face a tough fixture come December. We wish them the best. Go Gladiators!! Go!!

Why Chemisto? Here are the reasons.......

My name is Geofry Chemisto (Freeboy), a third year student and a recording/performing musician. I seek your vote so as to get to serve you as the Director Gender Sports and Entertainment. I have served as a peer counselor, I am the Public Relations Officer with the Gender League of Egerton University and A Campus Change Agent with I Choose Life Africa.

I wanna see Egertonians shine through their different talents, I went through the pain of striving to record music without the support of the institution, I know how it feels to have a talent but lack the support, nurturing and platform to showcase the same. Through you vote, I will have a chance to represent us all and present our request to both the administration and to institutions and companies that take up then nurture talents up from modelling, acting/drama, comedy, singing/rap, spoken word, artistry, writing, graffiti, designing as well as organize forums where students can be mentored by the successful talented personalities.
My aim remains making our own talents get out there and shine for we have this potential. So as to achieve this, I will work hand in hand with the existing clubs and societies that are talent based.

Secondly, our sports department is ill equipped. Our players do not have adequate kits to train and play in whereas other disciplines such as martial arts do not have appropriate training venues. Others are left out  of participation in tournaments. Here, I purpose to think outside the box by writing proposals to the corporate world, we have a lot of companies out there willing and able to support sports in institutions, Egerton included. Again I pledge to be selfless with regards to opportunities that come up such as the Zuku tournament and corporate with them so as to make our sporting environment favorable to all students and also invite other tournaments to have Egerton host them too. Lastly, I will push for better remuneration for our sports persons. Together with these teams, I purpose to adopt other ways of raising funds such as concerts to aid their activities. I purpose to closely work with the Sports Congress

Thirdly, we have the Gender League in campus. Most students miss out of the much it offers ranging from life skills to social awareness with regard to gender responsiveness. How many of us know that each year we have Gender Awareness Day? My aim is to make the Gender Agenda a part of all students ready to be part of this worthy cause of making Egerton Gender friendlier.

My fouth point is Entertainment. First, I choose to believe it's time to have university official public address system (sound). This will not only make events affordable but also help facilitate platforms where we can all get to appreciate the talents amongst us . Events like Mr and Miss Egerton, Freshers Night and culture week have for long been taken for granted whereas Talent week only exists in the SUEU budget. I pledge to make these events worth identifying with as well as honestly dedicate all the funds allocated to the same for them to be better trendier. Additionally, I promise to organize gigs that are safe, responsible and student centered where value for the charges charged plays is respected and ensure all events funded by the University remain Free. On the DSTV facilities, I intend to ensure the projections of major matches on as well as have better facilities (seats) in all TV halls around campus including the re installation of the Dstv in Tatton. It's time we have karaoke nights and theatre in FT2 to keep students entertained over the weekends

Lastly, we have needy students in campus. I purpose to ensure we have at least two Charity Concerts each semester where we will raise funds to help needy students get to get a reprieve from the struggles of everyday campus life.

GIFT OF A GIRL,LADY AND A WOMAN.............

This goes out to all young girls,and ladies out there.The ambitious,focused and determined girls of my age who Believe in themselves and have a positive take about the capabilities,talent and Uphold Personality.

I still remember My Lecturer once saying in a lecture that...He is ready to make a mistake if someone assures him that he is going to learn from the mistake made.This made me wonder why we should be that doubtful  that there must be an evidence to prove a mistake. 


Most of Us complicate our lives with so many issues that we  can avoid at all cost.
I sometimes love Mr Cross's song...that we shall never die till we achieve our dreams,if its education we Must study to our level best no matter what happens or the circumstances.

We tend to believe that we cannot make it on our own.The Biggest Mistake we Girls make is that of relying on other people to determine our happiness,our achievements, on how we do things...That you must always explain yourself to someone,that you are afraid to take that Move because it makes someone sad...Come on, its yourlife, take that risk.

The Past.....
This is a GREAT challenge to us, burying the past, it has never been easy for Us. Ain't That Guy............

“He drinks silly that he sleeps in the trenches, by the roadside and when on his worst, at the bar not to mention the curse words that embarks from his mouth. Each mama in the bar is beautiful and a probable one night stander and falls prey of any seductive talk that the month’s salary contributes half of the sales in the very hangout joint that pay day”. That aint me at all, it’s only the source of this opinion on me didn’t get to be at a table with me. Frankly!!!!!!

“He is a player, a definition of a heartbreaker,  a hit and run fanatic. He flirts so much and a pro in sexual harassment. The number of ladies he has messed up with can make up a whole arsenal fan base. The best he does is treat you for a favour and after you give in, he gets to hot heels never be be seen, heard of ever again”. Interestingly, she who said this failed to get my heat after all means of enticing and sweet talking, her relentless efforts bore no fruit in having me for a soul mate!!!!!!

“He fails to be a father figure in the family, his wife’s hair goes unkempt and children sleep on empty stomachs. He does not care of the family’s wellbeing; all he concentrates on is his parents, his clique of boys with big toys and of cause mpango wa kando. He gets home late in the night and leaves before the break of dawn, never keeps an eye whether his children get to go to school and whether they complete their homework, those sums that need his guidance to tackle them yet he yells at them each and every end term after the fall victim of the poorest of grades.” But, is the source of this tainting gossip not the one who ran to me for help in footing the electricity and water bills after he was manhandled by a prostitute in the hotel room he booked in and emptied of all the investment from his savings?

“he is a hypocrite, a part of the Pharisees of today. Never does he remit the 10% tithe expected for the smooth running of the affairs of the church, he leads praise and worship so as to been seen and adored at the expense of God the father and gives testimonies for the congregation to get a feel of how wealthy he is and how needy he may be a times”. Is this very person not the brother who was found guilty of misappropriating sadaka and offerings? Is he not that mastermind of that scandal that got the church to its knees with regard to the repaying that loan taken years back?

So, next time you wanna know me up and close, just get to interact with me on a personal level, get to discover who I am from an individual point of view, I am just tired of all the gossipers in the world today. Most a times we are mistaken just because a friend or “enemy” gave a completely misplaced information or view on us

It’s a fact that very few people give the positive part of our lives for their own selfish reasons and its for this very reasons that the betterment of our lives is on go slow. My prayer is that we all purpose to be that positive brother’s and sister’s keeper, that who wishes for the best for the other for if I get the best out of my life and you the best out of your life, in one way or another we will all be successful, the world will be filled with harmony and the world will be peaceful. Above all the heavens will rejoice.

The Egerton Kitchenette I Know

This is a haven, a darling, a bargain, a school, a nightmare, a no-go zone or better still a cupid joint depending on the unique makeup of each student in our campus. From the small background I got to unravel from the alumni of this university, this was a shock to most of them when its introduction dawned on them some years back; it meant no more heat in the room, no more delicacy aroma in the hostels.

But, I choose to read from a different script all together. In as much as this facilities ain’t reciprocal to the student population especially with the completion of hostels ongoing near the Ng’ombe plaza, we got swallow our pride and look at this from the brighter side. I choose to relate to these kitchenettes as grounds that we can get to experience the social world, that place where we can get to explore the social component of us.

A lot of us can get to shed the feathers of being shy, get rid of that talking phobia if we embrace the cooking time opportunity that can make us have lots of friends, after all none of us knows where or who our fellow comrades will be in future. That moment that we get to talk to the other, that person who is totally a stranger to you can bring up a complete make-over, that moment where you will get to up your esteem unknowingly. Again, we can get to up our cooking prowess by taking notes from others and also based on the fact that cooking in the midst of other students makes us cook better- no one wants to carry the tag of a ‘bad cook’

Interestingly, those of us still single can also get to meet their better halves in this very place, you never know for you cooking can draw a heart close for the better, or, get to meet that matchmaker. Again this is one place where behaviour is shaped especially where both ladies and gents cook together for the environment will most likely force one to be at his/her best in the course of cooking. Nonetheless, the waiting for one’s turn to cook gets to create the virtue of patience in us whereas the aspect of personal grooming for efficiency in ‘borrowing of coils’ is necessitated in this case.

But again, we need to fight this vice- tribalism for a better kitchenette experience and for fairness in the ‘borrowing’ process.
